3.IRON-ON MAIDEN<09/09/05 AT THE BUSH,ROYSTON > I am having a pint of ye olde ale, waiting for this so called amazing band to take the stage.HOLY HELL!!! These are amazing, moonchild begins the ceremony this evening.a further surge of nostalgic audio foreplay followed before we slow it down for revelations."When i say, scream your damn head off",royston obliges.after that there is a cooling down period of stranger in a strange land and 22 acacia ave before a face peeling rendition of no more lies. Flight of icarus is a refreshing burst of energy, proving to be a calm before the storm.speaking of storm,Rime of the ancient mariner follows, and i am totally astounded that these guys can pull off such a heart pounding version of one of the greatest heavy metal tunes of all time.RESPECT!.now another pump of old school rock and roll, the evil, through to hallowed almost brings the show to a close.Iron maidenfires through the amp,and i see my mate<never been into maiden>,banging his head like a god!!!! Eddie bouncing the stage and making a general ass of himself, brings the show to a close,to a standing ovation and applause by a harcore following.THE BAND ARE BACK!!!!beginning with be quick or be dead,it feels like donnington 1992 all over again."woe to you ,oh earth and sea",holy moly batman!the most powerfull and longest scream i have heard in many a year, that is the epitome of all maiden to me. Finally a change to the setlist instead of first album fave running free, the band play a face-melting rendition of run to the hills, upon hearing this the guy behind me nearly shat his pants with ecstacy. my friend of many years now is singing the song like he,s known it all his life.A truly enjoyable show, and testament to mighty lords of rock, iron maiden.UP THE IRON ONS!! What's in a name?
Well well effin well. It's the morning after the Iron On
Maiden gig at The California. After seeing Ni On Maiden
last month and after all the chat on the forum prior to
that gig I was really up for this one. So I packed all
my pre-conceived ideas about this band into my backpack
and headed down to the Cali to watch them.
Pre-conceived ideas you might ask? Well it's the name
you see. In my 42 years experience on this Earth I've
learned that nothing that is iron-on is ever any good.
(Except Wundaweb which Rocks 24/7) Remember the iron-on
patches you used to get for your denim jacket? They were
shit. Mine always used to peel off resulting in much
time spent in the Moreton Heavy trying to find an errant
Whitesnake or Led Zep patch. Hence a deep rooted
prejudice against the name 'Iron-On. As I got to the
Cali my mind was chunnering away in the style of Victor
Meldrew.....'Iron On Maiden? Iron On Maiden? Is that the
best they could come up with? I just don't believe it!!
They might as well have called themselves Strap On
Maiden.'
So as you can tell. I had a completely open mind going
into this gig.
The verdict? I arrived at The Cali fully expecting
Iron-On to be the third best Maiden trib out of the 3
I've seen at The Cali, after Maiden England and Nion
Maiden. But I was SO wrong. The guitar and drums were
awesome. They were very close to the original I thought.
But it was the singer that stole it for me. If a tribute
act is poor, 9 times outta 10 it's down to the singer.
This guy has got a fantastic voice and a great stage
presence. VERY Dickinson.
I give em a hefty 11 out of 10 and that's with a point
knocked off for the name. And that concludes the voting
for The Man In Blue.
Finally a big thanks to Colin and Chunky for a great
sound, too.
It was a shame you couldn't make it Necro my friend.
Trust me though. When you finally see this band you WILL
enjoy them.
